Dutch sailing trawlers wait for the tide in the harbour at Whitby, Yorkshire, England, in 1953

Fishermen in clogs on board Dutch trawlers in the harbour at Whitby, Yorkshire, England, in 1953. The North Sea trawlers seem to be relying entirely on sails, with no funnels in sight. This photograph was taken by a Yorkshire married couple, George and Kathleen Blenkhorn, and captioned by them in a family album: "The Dutch trawlers waiting for the tide". A trawler is a vessel designed to operate fishing trawls - nets that are pulled along the seabed or at midwater. Trawling as a method of fishing in the open sea originated along the shallow sandy coast of Holland and, according to some accounts, was brought to England by Dutch seamen who settled in Brixham, Devon, after the armada of Prince William of Orange landed there in 1688. Steam was first used in British sea fisheries in the 1850s and the sailing trawl fleet only survived into the 20th century in the relatively shallow southern North Sea. Whitby in North Yorkshire (formerly the North Riding of Yorkshire) is a fishing port on England's North East coast and the River Esk, which flows into Whitby Harbour to join the North Sea. On the east side of the River is the founding point of the settlement, which dates back to 656 AD, and Whitby Abbey, which inspired Bram Stoker, author of 'Dracula'. Captain James Cook, the Yorkshireman who explored Newfoundland, Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii, was first taken on as a merchant navy apprentice in Whitby and a replica of Captain Cook's ship, The Endeavour, makes regular sea voyages from Whitby Harbour.
