An important Russian Cossack shashka for officers, dated 1838 From the circle of Ivan Boyarshinov. High-quality, fullered pipe-back blade, probably of fine Damascus steel, with yelmen. Both sides featuring gold-inlaid cartouches with fine floral decoration. The obverse with crown and inscription "Zlatoust". The reverse with tsar's cypher "N I" for Nicholas I and date 1838. Minor flaws, dark patina. Elaborately made tortoiseshell grip with finely engraved and chased silver mounts. Length 97 cm.
