Comparative transmission electron micrographs (TEMs) of a cross-sectioned brush border in an intestinal enterocyte (left) and a kidney proximal tube (right). The microvilli of the brush border are more homogeneous, somewhat thicker and, essentially, arranged in a more regular way in the intestine. The glycocalyx is also more developed in the enterocyte.
