In 1816 he en-tered the legislature, and serv-ed the state as representative,speaker of the house, and sen-ator until 1826, having been act-ing governor in 1831-32. In1836 he was elected governorby nearly five-sixths of the en-tire vote, and was re-elected in1828. During his term he didmuch to improve the conditionof the public-school system, en-couraged the establishment ofmanufacturing concerns, andstarted the reforms in the meth-ods of penitentiary controlwhichmade the institution at Colum-bus a model. He was an ardentwhig and did much to keep hisparty in power. In 1832 he retir-ed to his farm and devoted him-self to agriculture, establishingand becoming the first president of the State Agri-cultural Society.
