Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Deinococcus radiophilus, Gram-positive, aerobic, coccoid bacterium (prokaryote). This coccoid bacterium is highly resistant to extreme environmental conditions. Deinococcus radiophilus (formerly known as Micrococcus radiophilus) is an extremophile bacterium that is resistant to ionizing radiation. It is also known to degrade hydrocarbon compounds. Deinococcus sp. have thick cell walls that show gram-positive staining, but they include a second membrane and thus are closer in structure to Gram-negative bacteria. Deincoccus sp. form diploid or tetrad clusters of cells due to cell division. Magnification: x5,000 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
