An early printed portrait of John Hunter , renowned British (Scottish) Scientist and Surgeon (1728-1793). Despite allegations that he bought bodies from body snatchers to dissect for medical research (including that of the giant Charles Byrne), he is considered one of the most distinguished scientists and surgeons of his day. He once worked with the dentist James Spence pioneering tooth transplants and in 1764 set up his own anatomy school in London. He also owned his own small private zoo where and is thought by some to be the the inspiration for the literary character Doctor Dolittle .
