With few exceptions, theOhio Eiver west, and Chesapeake Bay east of the mountains,are the recipients of the waters of the whole State: those ofEastern Virginia flow, with an almost uniform south-easterlycourse, into the bay, carrying with them also the waters of thegreat valley, excepting only those of New Eiver and theHolston, on the extreme southern part. The Potomac rises in the Great Back Bone, but a few milesfrom the Youghiogeny, and pursuing a devious course, forcesits way through the several intermediate mountain chains tothe Piedmont section, where it is broken by falls nine milesabove Georgetown, at which place it meets the tide-water, and 68 RICHMOND BUSINESS m SUCCESSORS TO J. At Alexandria, 290 miles from the ocean, itis 1^ miles wide, and below tlie city gradually expands, till atits moiitli it forms a broad estuary, 10 miles in breadth. Shipsof the line ascend to the navy yard at Washington ; above thisit is obstructed by numerous falls and rapids. The principaltributaries of the Potomac are its South Branch, which risesnear the head-streams of James River, the Great Cacapon, andthe Shenandoah, the latter of which flows about 120 miles alongthe western base of the Blue Ridge, and joins the main river atHarpers Ferry.
