The Jennings, Demarest, and Hygeia are types of thisclass. The principal objection is that the plunger sometimesfails to properly close the outlet, allowing the water to drain outof the bowl, and thus destroying one of its principal mechanism is also somewhat complicated and likely to getout of order. The hopper-closet consists of a deep earthenware or enameled HOUSE-DRAINAGE. 169 iron bowl, with a water-seal trap directly underneath. Theexcreta are received directly into the proximal end of the trap, and when the water is turned on the sides of the bowl arewashed clean and everything in the bowl and trap swept directlyinto the soil-pipe. There is no complicated mechanism to getout of order, the trap is always in sight, and the entire appa-ratus can always be kept clean and inoffensive, as there are nohidden corners or angles for filth to lodge. This form of closetis, all things considered, one of the best for general Fig. 9.—The Dececo Closet. (New Form.) The wash-out closets are of various shapes, some havingthe trap in the bowl itself, others having a double are generally simple in construction, and not likely to getout of order. They do not present any decided advantages overthe simple hopper, although at the present time they are moreused than any other form of closet. Of the recent improvementsin this form of closet may be mentioned the A. G. M.,^ shown * Manufactured by the Myers Sanitary Depot, New York. 170 TEXT-BOOK OF HYGIENE.
