The Italian missionary Matteo Ripa spent between 1711-1723 as an artist at court of Emperor Kangxi. He made this print series in cooperation with some Chinese printmakers. The starting point for the design of Shen Yu were the poems written by Emperor Kangxi. The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam has 31 prints of the series.
