The penitentiary at the penal settlement at Port Arthur on the Tasman Peninsula in Tasmania


The convict settlement of Port Arthur in Tasmania was established in 1830 and finally closed in 1877. By 1840 it housed over 2000 convicts and civil staff and was a major industrial settlement producing everything from ships to shoes.
