Dill, and thus the two greatparties had eminently able representatives at the headof their tickets, and men completely equipped alike incharacter and attainments to fill the ofhce of Governorw^ith the highest measure of credit. Africa, the Democratic candidate for secretary ofinternal affairs, had creditably served in the Legisla-ture, although representing a strong Republican dis-trict, and was very highly respected, while Dunkel,his Republican competitor, suffered to some extentfrom defection within his own party.
