Downstream view, towards the setting sun, of canalised Rio Mapocho flowing past the trees of Parque Venezuela, Santiago, Chile

The Rio Mapocho splits Santiago in two. It was canalised in the 19th century to manage river floods and allow urban development of the river banks. Chile's geological structure involves a Central Valley between the Andes to the east and Coastal Range of hills to the west. It is considered an ugly river, but an eastern sunset adds an element of beauty.
