The abductor pollicis longus is stimulated about midwaybetween the elbow and wrist near the radial border of the fore-arm (Fig. 157). Its action is to abduct the thumb, leaving thelast phalanx partly flexed (Fig. 158). MOTOR POINTS OF THE TRUNKAL MUSCLES. 181 The extensor minimi digit! can rarely be stimulated alonethrough the nerve, but contraction can be produced by sendingthe current directly through the muscle. The point is a littleabove the middle of the forearm near the ulnar border. Motor Points of the Trunkal Muscles.—The action of theintercostal muscles is to raise the ribs during inspiration. How-ever, owing to. the superposition of other muscles, the formercannot be isolated and their actions separately studied in the M. Rectus abdominis(Nervi intercostalesabdominalos).. By pressing the electrode firmly against thelower border of the ribs the muscles for that interspace will bethrown into contraction. The motor points for the recti muscles of the abdomen arefour or five in number. Simultaneous stimulation of all thesepoints causes flattening of the abdomen. When those abovethe umbilicus are alone stimulated the abdominal wall is drawnupward; when those below are stimulated the wall is drawndownward. 182 PRACTICAL ELECTRICITY IN MEDICINE AND SURGERY. The external oblique muscle has four or five points laterallyabove the umbilicus. (See Fig. 159). The action is to flattenthe lateral abdominal walls. The transversalis muscle of the abdomen can be stimulatedat the anterior border of the quadratus lumborum just above
