The ovarian capsule consists of a thin membrane of connective tissue covered on both surfaces by mesothelium. Small, blindly ending vestigial tubules of the Wolffian body, the epoophoron, may be present in or near the mesovarium. These are lined by cuboidal, often ciliated, epithe- lium and are surrounded by a thin circular smooth muscle wall. A cross section of the ovary of an adult mouse (Fig. 76) shows an inner zone, the medulla (or zona vasculosa), and a surrounding outer zone, the cortex.
