Calibrating a pH meter. Buffer solution (green) being used to calibrate a pH meter. The meter is showing a neutral pH (), but the calibration of this reading depends on the temperature. A table of variation of the pH of the buffer solution with temperature is shown on the label on the bottle (pH at 25 degrees Celsius). The pH scale is the hydrogen ion concentration in a solution relative to that in water. Alkalis (pH greater than 7) contain less free hydrogen ions than water, and acids (pH less then 7) contain more of these hydrogen ions.
