Eclipse volvelle (wheel chart) from the 1540 book Astronomicum Caesareum, showing a partial lunar eclipse as the moon crosses Earth's shadow (the umbra, black). Astronomicum Caesareum is an astronomical atlas that contains early examples of volvelles, in which nested circular pieces of paper rotated by revolving on grommets. It was made for King Charles V by the German printer Petrus Apianus (1495-1552).
