TEMPUR memory foam, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This viscoelastic memory foam, made from polyurethane, was originally developed in the 1970s at NASA Ames Research Center, California, USA, to improve seating comfort and g-force protection in spacecrafts. After it was abandoned by NASA, its use was limited to medical cushions and mattresses for pressure sore prevention. It was further developed by Tempur World's Dan-Foam factory in Denmark and released for commercial sale in 1991. Magnification: x250 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
