Synchrotron beamline. Equipment used on a beamline to focus X-rays in a synchrotron, a type of particle accelerator. This beamline is part of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, France. One of the functions of this site is to provide facilities for synchrotron X-ray tomographic microscopy (SRXTM), used to scan and study fossils. It is also used in protein crystallography, earth science, materials science, chemistry and physics. The ESRF was inaugurated in 1994.
