The First battalion, the story of the 406th telegraph battalion, Signal corps . on of the two Companies. Circulars were prepared and sent to allof the Telephone Companys male employees. This was just before ourcountry entered the struggle and but little was known of what the actualwork of the Telegraph Battalion was to be, though in those dark-days it was realized that our country could not remain out of the conflictmuch longer. Of the six thousand male employees in the Company, manyof whom were beyond the military age, fourteen hundred or more thantwenty per cent applied. This was nearly seven times as many as couldbe selected. War was declared before the applications were received, and it becameknown rather definitely that those who were selected would have some workmore serious than the fifteen days in a training camp each summer. Theapplications were quickly classified, and soon a number of men had been tenta-tively selected for further examination. These men, about five hundred, wereall personally interviewed, the fact that war had been declared put squarely. Leonard H. Kinnard
