In our first volume we gave a complete list of the Governors ofMassachusetts, from 1620 to 1847, with a brief sketch of GovernorCarver. In the second volume we gave sketches of the governorsunder the first charter. We propose to continue in this, and in futurevolumes, brief sketches of each, in chronological order. We give,also, facsimiles of their autographs, faithfully taken by N. B. Shurtleff,M. I)., from original documents. We are chiefly indebted, for the fol-lowing notices, to the Amencan Biographical and Historical Diction^ary by William Allen, A. Joseph Dudley, governor of Massachusetts, was the son of Dudley, and was born September 23, 1647. In his childhood,after his fathers death, he was imder the care of the Rev. Mr. Allen ofDedham, who married his mother. He was graduated at Harvardcollege in 1665. He afterwards entered into the service of his coun-try in the Indian war of 1675. In 1682 he went to England as anagent for the province. When the government was changed in 1686he was appointed president of Massachusetts and New commission was received in May 1686. His authority was ofshort continuance, for Andros arrived at the close of the same , however, was continued in the council, and was appointed chiefjustice. In 1689 he went again to England, and in 1690 returnedwith a commission of chief justice of New York, and continued in thiscountry three years. He was then eight years lieutenant-governor ofthe Isle of Wight. He w
