Arts Great Storehouse Distinguished among institutions of its class, whetherin the new world or among the more classic centers of artin the old, is the Art Institute of Chicago, which requires 145. 146 and deserves the publics continued appreciation and in-creased support if the fine arts shall flourish in this cityas its ideals demand. The Institute is a popular pos-session in two senses—it has the support of over 13,000members, and last year over 1,000,000 people visitedits galleries. The Institute is now asking for the modestsum of $1,000,000 to carry on and develop the work ofone of Chicagos major activities and nearly one-third ofthis sum has already been subscribed. The Art Instituteis the recognized leader and dominant factor in Chicagosart world, and its call to the public to aid in financing itsnecessary expenditure and expansion is the result ofits position and growth. It faces a deficit in operatingincome and at the same time faces the need for expansionthat is nothing less than compulsory.
