This is a false coloured scanning electron micrograph of Shigella sonne

This is a false coloured scanning electron micrograph of Shigella sonnei, a waterborne and foodborne bacterial pathogen causing "shigellosis" (gastroenteritis - bloody faeces associated with intestinal pain). The affliction is restricted to higher primates including humans. In the UK, a recent S. sonnei outbreak was associated with the consumption of contaminated Iceberg lettuce. Otherwise, infections occur predominately among young children and usually are associated with poor hygienic conditions in childcare settings. However, an outbreak of multi resistant S. sonnei in Australia was reported from a long stay geriatric nursing centre. There are 4 Shigella species: S. flexneri, S. boydii, S. sonnei, and S. dysenteriae.
