In 1896 he went to Zurich, Switzerland, The fomily of Charlotte C Noyes originally settled where he spent a year at the Federal Polytechnicumin the study of Chemical Technology under Profes-sor Lunge. In 1897 he was appointed Instructor. ALFRED HOLMES WHITE in Chemical Technology at the University of Mich-igan, and in 7904 was advanced to the rank ofAssistant Professor. Meanwhile, he pursued studiesin the Department of Engineering and received thedegree of Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineer-ing in 1904. He is a member of the AmericanChemical Society, the Society of Chemical Industryof England, and the Michigan Academy of Science ;also, an honorary member of the Michigan GasAssociation. In 1903 he was married to RebeccaMason Downey, of Pueblo, Colorado, and they havea son, Alfred McLaren. ARTHUR LYON CROSS was born atPortland, Maine, November 14, 1S73, son of Emer-lous Dockendorff and Charlotte Cahoun (Noyes)Cross. Of his fathers family one branch, the pater-nal, was of English origin, first settled in America atCrosss Hill, near Augusta, Maine; the maternalfamily, the Dockendorffs, were (Germans who settledin Pemaquid, Maine, in the eighteenth century. in Newbury and Rowley, Massachusetts, in 1636and 1638 ; her
