(July 24, 2008) The attack submarine USS Scranton (SSN 756) departs Naval Station Norfolk’s Pier 3 for a brief underway to complete Electronic Navigation Certification using the Voyage Management System (VMS). VMS, a combination of digital charts, constant global positioning system fixes, environmental sensors and electronic command and control, will allow the submarine to eliminate many of the constraining aspects of navigation when using paper charts.
