Wilbur Wright in his workshop. US aviation pioneer Wilbur Wright (1867-1912) working in the bicycle workshop in Dayton, Ohio, USA, where many of his designs were constructed. After experimenting with biplane kites and gliders between 1899 and 1902, Wilbur and his brother Orville converted one of their gliders into a powered aircraft by attaching a petrol engine and two propellers. This aircraft, the Wright Flyer, made its first flight on 17 December 1903, with Orville at the controls. Their first public flight was in 1908, in France. Wilbur died of typhoid fever in 1912. This photograph, from the Wright brothers' own collection, dates from 1902.
