Memorial cross, Haydon, Northumberland, c1955-c1980. A detailed view of a celtic-style memorial cross which stands 300 metres east of Light Birks Farmhouse on the A686 road. The cross is 19th century and was erected by Cadwallader Bates, who restored Langley Castle in the 1890s. It consists of a celtic-style round cross on a shaft with the arms of Derwentwater. It commemorates James and Charles, Earls of Derwentwater, who were executed for treason for their parts in the 1715 and 1745 Jacobite Risings. There is an inscription on the square base, which reads: "IN MEMORY OF JAMES AND CHARLES VISCOUNTS LANGLEY EARLS OF DERWENTWATER BEHEADED ON TOWER HILL 24 FEB 1716 AND 8 DEC 1746 FOR LOYALTY TO THEIR LAWFUL SOVEREIGN".
