FIRST FOOTHOLD OX THE SOUTHERN COAST.—THE FIFTIETH PEXXSYLVANTA Although the 1^2,000 troops under Brigadier-General Thomas W. Sherman took no part in the bombardment of the forts at Port Royalin November, 1861, their work was cut out for them when the abandoned works had to be occupied and rendered adequate for thedefense of the Federal naval base here established upon the Southern coast. Particularly active in these operations was the brigadeof General Stevens. We see him with his staff at his headquarters, an old Colonial mansion near Hilton Head. The Fiftieth Pennsyl-vania in Stevens Brigade won its first laurels in the campaigning and fighting which followed upon the conquest of Port Royal.
