Confederate Jacket, c. 1864. James Hughes of the 4th New York Heavy Artillery wore this jacket for six months and four days while confined at North Carolina’s Salisbury Prison. Captured at the Second Battle of Ream’s Station during the siege of Petersburg on August 25, 1864 along with 325 other members of his regiment, each prisoner was stripped of his clothing, money and other valuables and provided with Confederate cast-offs such as this jacket before being transferred to Salisbury and other Confederate prison camps.
