Magnetic compass. Magnetic compass on a background of moss and dead leaves. A compass is a navigational instrument. It consists of a thin, free swinging magnetised needle fixed to a dial. The dial is graduated in degrees and shows the cardinal points (north, south, east and west). Here the cardinal points and the north seeking end of the needle have been painted with green, luminous paint. The metal arm on the compass' face is a locking device which prevents damage to the needle's pivot when it is not in use. Lower left is a cover for the dial face. The needle indicates the north and south magnetic poles, following the local lines of magnetic force.
