Persuaded by brother Leif Ericson to come to Greenland, Thorvald did and was later killed by natives.


Thorvald (also spelled Thorwald) was a Scandinavian/Norse navigator and said to be the brother of Leif Ericson and Eric the Red (colonizer of Greenland). Persuaded by Leif to come to Greenland, Thorvald did and ventured on, landing, it is said in Rhode Island in 1002. Two years later, while exploring the area, Thorvald was killed by natives who shot him in the stomach with their bows and arrows, as pictured in this illustration dating to around 1890. The wounds proved fatal.
