CLARA AUGUSTA RICE. Claea Augusta, oldest dau. of Edward C. and Ianthe BlanchardRice, was b. in Lowell, Mass., March 19, 1852. She inherited hermothers musical talents and from early childhood she received in-struction in vocal and instrumental music with the best teachers ofLowell and Boston. She was graduated from the Lowell High School,and, young as she was, she was the leader of the Cathedral choir, thelargest church in Lowell at that time. Her powerful mezzo-sopranovoice attracted the attention of the musical profession and herparents were advised to send her abroad for study and to fit her foroperatic and oratorio lines of work, for which nature had so admirablyendowed her. She gave up her large class of pupils in piano in-struction and went to Milan, Italy, where she was making rapidprogress when stricken with the dreaded fever, which nearly alwaysproves fatal to Americans, and passed on to join the choir invisible,. lANTHE BLANCHARD RICE.
