Tollund Man. Mummified body of Tollund Man, a \bog body\" dated 220-40 BC. This most well-preserved body of an adult man was discovered in 1950 in a bog at Tollund Mose in Jutland, Denmark. About 30- 40 years of age, 1. 6m in height, he lies with arms bent and legs drawn up. Naked except for a leather cap and belt, he died by being hanged using a braided leather noose. Analysis of his stomach shows his last meal was a gruel of barley and wild seeds. Many ancient bog bodies of northwest Europe met violent deaths by murder or religious sacrifice. Low temperature and oxygen, & high tannins in bogs led to the mummification."
