The Red Fort (Lal Qila) of Delhi is an eloquent reminder of the opulence and glory of the Mughal Empire. Built by Shah Jehan (began in 1639, finished in 1648) it replaced Agra as the capital city of the Mughal Empire. The Pearl Mosque enclosed by red sandstone walls and crowned with gilded domes was added by Aurangzeb in Rang Mahal or the "Palace of Colours" housed the Emperor's wives and mistresses.
