Merchant Marine Inspection. Coast Guard marine safety inspection duties cover nearly every phase of an American merchant vessel's life from paper planning and model stages, throughout construction, and on to the graveyard. Now merchant vessels, as typified by this nearly completed tanker at the Sun Shipbuilding and Drydock Yard in Chester, Pa. (near Philadelphia), are subject to extensive inspections throughout construction to insure that the plans which the Coast Guard approved are followed exactly and according to Federal safety regulations.
