Liver and gallbladder, post-mortem. The liver (brown) is a large abdominal organ that plays a vital role in body metabolism, as well as producing bile. Bile is discharged into the duodenum (region of the intestine connecting to the stomach) and digests the fats in food. The gallbladder (centre) stores the bile (black part) until it is needed. Post-mortem examinations, also known as autopsies, are carried out to identify a cause of death, and to assess the health of a dead person's organs.
