Blue sky white cumulus clouds, sunny day view of a tree trunk, with tall slanting branch at one end, lying on a vast expanse of dry beach sand, looking east towards Fairhaven, Lytham and the West Pennines, Ribble Estuary, Lancashire. Wind-blown sand has accumulated around the log. The tidal range on the beach varies. A 7 metre high tide covers only a small section of beach, allowing large areas to dry out and blow in the wind. A 10 metre high tide, in contrast, will flood the beach and reach the coastline, leaving the beach wet at low tide. Tree remains, derived from bank erosion in the upper reaches of the River Ribble, are occasionally washed onto the beach by the high tide. This trunk stayed a few weeks before being washed away. Others, in contrast, may be washed nearer and nearer the coastline, where they may be cut up and removed.
