Phrenology was a theory developed by the German physician Franz Joseph Gall in 1796 that suggested a person's personality was determined by the shape of their skull. The study became very popular during Victorian times and the photograph shows a part of one of the china phrenology heads produced by Fowler & Co. to assist in the interpretation of a person's 'bumps'.
