Among them are: The fact thatit was formerly a steam road, but has now been completelychanged for electric traction, with resultant economy and effi-ciency; the large freight business it handles in connectionwith its electrically-equipped wharves, and the building of allits own cars in its own shops. Valuable water-rightprivileges were acquired at the seaboard and a terminal wassecured in the southern part of Los Angeles about 3 miles fromthe center of the city. For about thirteen years the road wasoperated as a steam line in friendly competition with the SantaFe, which owns a standard gage steam road between the citiesnamed. The Los Angeles & Redondo Railway passes through afertile and attractive territory that has steadily been built upand improved in keeping with the general growth of all south-ern California.
