Bathurst, Australia, October 5th, 1986: Race track safety marshalls stand beside the crashed car of Mike Burgmann following his 260km per hour impact with tyre barriers near the bottom of the 2km long Conrod Straight. On the 5th lap of the 1000km race, Mike Burgmann became the first driver to die while competing in the Bathurst 1000 when he was pronounced dead on arrival at Bathurst Hospital. The following year a chicane was added to Conrod Straight to slow drivers and bring the now straight up to world racing standard.
