Naturally studious and aspiring, hisdays of arduous toil in the shops of the locomotive company werefollowed by nights of instructive reading and research. Such abilityand patient determination could not escape recognition, and on May 2,1882, he was appointed Police Justice of the city. From that timeuntil the first day of January, 1904, he held the position continuously,his efficiency and popularity having gained for him election in 1883,and re-elections in ^y, 91, 95 and 99. In November, 1903, after aspirited campaign, he was elected Mayor of Schenectady, wresting thecity from Republican control, and entered upon the duties of that officein January of the following year.
