Regional Container Lines (RCL) started operating in 1979 between Bangkok and Singapore. In 1988 it was listed on the Thailand Stock Exchange and currently owns 41 container vessels covering more than 70 destinations in Asia, Australasia and the Middle East. The Pira Bhum was built in Singapore in 1997. It has a speed of knots and a TEU capacity of 628, which is the number of standard 20 foot containers measuring 20 x 8 x feet ( x x metres) a vessel can carry. It is equipped with its own container handling cranes. Hong Kong was the world's busiest container port 1987-89, 1992-97 and 1999-2004. It is a hub-port serving the South-East and East Asia Region, being the largest container port serving Southern China. It currently has nine container terminals in the deep waters of Victoria Harbour.
