Surveying at Cueva Fantasma fossil site. This site, discovered in 2016, is part of the Atapuerca complex. This complex consists of several hominin fossil sites located on the south-western edge of the Sierra de Atapuerca mountains in northern Spain. The extensive discoveries at the Atapuerca sites have led to numerous advancements in the understanding of human evolution. In 2000, Sierra de Atapuerca was made a world heritage site by UNESCO.
