Originally constructed as the ocean liner SS Manhattan, Wakefield was chartered for troop transport by the Government on June 6, 1941 and was commissioned as a naval transport ship on June 15, 1941. She operated in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theatres during World War II, participating in transport convoys and often acting as a "lone wolf," relying upon her superior speed to evade enemy submarines. A rapidly spreading fire that broke out deep within the bowels of the ship on the evening of September 3, 1942 necessitated her complete rebuild in Boston, after which she was recommissioned on February 10, 1944. USS Wakefield served the duration of the war and was decommissioned on June 15, 1946. 1944-01-01T00:00:00. Northeast Region (Boston, MA). Photographic Print. Department of the Navy.
