In conclusion, it should be recalled that the turbine on ex-hibit represents the beginning of the present turbine industryin America. Its failure would have been even more conspicuousthan has been its success. It is therefore reasonable to supposethat improved methods of manufacture and increased under-standing of the turbine art should have resulted in an im-proved machine rather than the reverse, as our detractorswould have you believe. FIG. 6.—SECTION OF VANE IN CONTIN-UOUS USE SINCE 1899 ELECTRIFICATION OF THE LULU ISLAND RAILWAY An interesting example of the electrification of branches of asteam railroad is offered by the Lulu Island division of theCanadian Pacific Railway. This branch is 15 miles long, andconnects Vancouver with Steveston, the center of the salmoncanning industry. The farm land along this route is especiallyadapted to dairying and fruit raising. The work of electrification is to be carried out by the BritishColumbia Electric Railway Company, Ltd., which has made atraffic arrangement, dating from July i, 1905, with the steamrailroad mentioned. The latter is running two trains a day atpresent. When the electrification is completed, double-truckcars, 48 ft. long, built by the British Columbia Electric Rail-way Company, will leave the Granville Street station, Van-couver, every hour. There will be one sub-station, this beinglocated near Eburne, 10 miles from Vancouver
