Engraving depicting James Wimshurst's static or 'influence' machine. This consisted of glass plates on which were mounted pieces of brass, the plates revolved in opposite directions. As plates moved, stationary brushes made contact with the brass and received positive and negative charges. Used therapeutically in treatment by Franklinism.
