The exterior of the ivy-covered building at Chateau Montelena in Napa Valley. Chateau Montelena became famous for its chardonnay which put the vineyard and Napa Valley on the winemaking map by besting all white wines in a blind tasting in 1976., The historic 'Judgment of Paris wine competition. Of the 10 white wines competing, 11 French experts all awarded first place to two California chardonnays, Chateau Montelena and Chalone Vineyards with Montelena garnering the most first place votes. The red wine category at the tasting was also won by a Napa Valley vineyard, Stag's Leap Winery, winning with its cabernet sauvignon. Bottles from the 1976 tasting winners, Chateau Montelena and Stag's Leap Winery are in the Smithsonian National Museum in Washington, Chateau Montelena's fame increased dramatically by the 2008 movie 'Bottle Shock" which dramatized the events surrounding the 1976 Paris tasting.
