THE HEAD, FACE, JAWS AND TEETH 367 The patient has had measles, chicken-pox, mumps, andtwo attacks of pneumonia. Had severe rheumatism at theage of twenty-one, and at the present time there is tuber-culosis of the left ankle. An examination of the jaws revealed the following facts:The lower jaw is excessively large; although all of the teethof the lower jaw tip inward, yet the outer cusps of the upperteeth just touch the inner cusps of the lower teeth. There ismarked arrest of development of the upper jaw, and on theright side the arch has a tendency to assume the saddle-shapeddeformity. On this side the cuspid has erupted externally. The lateral incisor on the leftside is situated internally to the central incisor and cuspid, and has caused a slight rotation of the central incisor. Thesecond molars are small, and have erupted externally to thefirst molar on account of lack of room in the jaw. Thealveolar process and mucous membrane are hypertrophied. This case clearly shows that at the time of the formationof the irregularities of the teeth the alveolar process andmucous membrane began to hypertrophy; coincident with 368 ETIOLOGY OF OSSEOUS DEFORMITIES OF these was arrest of development of the bones of the face, noseand jaw, and the habit of mouth-breathing was formed.
