An image looking up Watchbell street showing typical architecture of Rye.

The small town of Rye was in medieval times an important member of the Cinque Ports and almost entirely surrounded by the sea. It is officially a civil parish but with its historic roots has the status of a town. The history of smuggling gangs of the 18th and 19th centuries, enchanting cobbled streets, a medieval church and beautifully preserved historic houses from medieval, Tudor and Georgian times make it a popular tourist destination.
