An instance of this is the Cathedral of Bologna, S. Petronio,designed by Antonio di Vicenzo {Fig. 370). This building, whichwas intended to be the largest church of the period, is scarcely morethan half completed. It was begun in 1390, and the vaults of thenave are as late as 1580, the system of the Florentine cathedralbeing thus continued, without essential improvement, until late in.
