Swollen knee after operation. 40-year-old man's swollen knee (reddened area) 2 weeks after a knee operation. He had a meniscectomy, the removal of meniscus cartilage from the knee. This could be to treat a knee injury. The swelling is of a bursa (bursitis), a fluid-filled structure found in joints, including the knee. The inflammation is located in the area in front of the patella (knee cap), and is called prepatellar bursitis.
